Antler River Paddling Accesses

London, Ontario

In an effort to improve the accessibility and function of paddling access points along London’s Antler (Thames) River, SHIFT was retained by the City to provide analysis and design for three key locations: Riverside, Greenway, and Springbank Parks. Though physically separated, the project sought to create a unifying identity for the spaces, all tied to the significance of the river.

Each site presents its own set of challenges, including bank erosion, steep slopes, and requirements for emergency access. Being in the river’s floodplain, the reality of significant flood events was also a key consideration. The design process embraced these complexities, presenting opportunities for shoreline stabilization, preserving space for naturalization, interpretation and ecological enhancement. The proposed designs balance the river’s dynamic nature, incorporating resilient materials that can respond to flooding while allowing safe access for people.
