St. Vincent Park

In collaboration with the City of Barrie, SHIFT led the redevelopment of St. Vincent Park, a cherished historic space on Barrie’s north shore. Dominated by a canopy of windswept pines and gnarled cedars, the park’s natural character shaped a design approach that respected both the site’s heritage and its striking landscape. The community’s deep connection to the park, and their desire to preserve its legacy, was reflected in a strong public engagement response.

The final design respected the park’s natural features, introducing a simple form that embraced the mature trees while enhancing accessibility and function. New play and gathering areas were crafted to create visual and physical connections to Kempenfelt Bay, helping to ground the park into the surrounding landscape. The design reimagined exploratory play by incorporating natural elements that foster sensory discovery, reinforcing the park’s unique charm.

The community has embraced the park’s transformation, and its new spaces continue to flourish.
