Beginning in 2022, a SHIFT-led team began work with the University of Toronto Scarborough to create a vision and guiding plan for the 4-hectare Campus Farm site. Since 2018, the Campus Farm has been a space for research and teaching, engaging both members of the campus and local Scarborough communities. The focus of the work was to establish the site as a core campus facility that can become a recognized hub for land-based activities, supporting a wide range of uses and organizing the site through a plan that can be achieved over time.
Engagement and consultation were fundamental to the work, with UTSC and the project team coordinating interviews, working groups, and collaborative workshops with a variety of participants, helping to bring many voices into the plans. Ultimately, the site design aims to build on the many natural assets of the place while providing a framework to address noted issues including impacted soils, the presence of invasive species, and a location somewhat removed from the main campus areas.
The final plan includes an investigation of the existing Campus Farm site, the proposed site plan, and strategies, standards and directions that will support a phased implementation.
