The Laurel Greenway Master Plan identified the Brighton Street Trailhead as a catalyst project, one of a select group of projects that would initiate its implementation. As the first part of the master plan to be realized, it was an opportunity to set the tone for later projects and focus on details that highlighted Laurel Creek.
The trailhead is located at the edge of Uptown Waterloo, on a stretch of trail characterized as more naturalistic than other sections. For this reason, the design was inspired by Laurel Creek, its historic naturally meandering course, and the urban wildlife it supports. Timber and stone benches create a restful stop for trail users, increasing trail accessibility, and an interpretive sign highlights local wildlife with particular attention paid to the great blue heron that is often seen in the creek. Stainless steel inlays of fish – and one heron – are embedded in a ribbon-like paved band that provides a sense of the creek’s former meandering course. Bird houses on colourful posts rise from perennial gardens, increasing the visibility of natural processes in an urban context.
Additionally, there is a more functional entry/exit to and from the Laurel Trail and a more direct connection to Brighton Park. Approximately 500 metres of pedestrian lighting was also added to the trail, further increasing its usability and safety in all seasons.
