Woven Histories recalls and interprets the textile history within the City of Cambridge. The site is located on an island at one of the busiest intersections in the City, and was conceived as a transit hub by the City and Region to support its growing public transportation infrastructure and network. The concept provides significant seating opportunities for people waiting for buses and for students from the high school, adjacent to the site. The structure in the centre is an abstraction of a textile drying rack, with the custom perforated steel mesh being reminiscent of billowing cloth, blowing in the wind. The seat blocks, which incorporate the names of historic mills and supporting business, are inspired by the bales of textile which lined the floors of the mills. Their various heights provide seating options for different sizes of people while also providing visual interest and elements for children to play on while they wait with parents for the next bus to come.
